Just a few of the awesome women who shoot with us each month!

Welcome, Ladies!  We’re so glad you have come to our site.  We hope you are visiting HerHandgun.com because:

  1. You’re ready to learn how to SHOOT – or-
  2. You want to brush up on your existing handgun skills – or –
  3. You are ready to begin competing in an action pistol match!

HerHandgun.com firearms CLASSES and pistol MATCHES are operated by Debbie Keehart and Kippi Leatham.   We compete in practical shooting events on a local, national and world-wide basis.  We are both action pistol champions, and combined, we have been competing in organized action pistol, rifle and shotgun matches for over 35 years.

Our mission at HerHandgun.com is multi-fold:

  • To ASSIST women with firearms safety and basic to advanced pistol instruction.
  • To EMPOWER women with the knowledge & confidence required to shoot a handgun proficiently.
  • To INCREASE the number of responsible women firearm owners. There are far too many women at the range watching their significant others.
  • To ENCOURAGE women to get out of their comfort zone and compete in organized shooting sports.
  • To EDUCATE women about firearms ownership & the importance of our Second Amendment Right.

Why do we do this?

  • It’s a proven fact that women learn better from women.
  • And it’s so very rewarding!

We are at a point in our careers where we want to focus on getting more women out to the shooting range!   We have seen a recent influx of ladies at our local range, but they are usually watching their “significant other” shoot.  We think that if you are going to take time out of your busy day to go to the range, you may as well be shooting your own gun!

Mother-Daughter Moments and March Matchness

March is off to a great start!

  • Moms & Daughters:  We  had a mother-daughter basic pistol class this weekend that was big fun (cannot think of a better way to spend some quality time with a loved one!).  Good thing we didn’t get too competitive, as it would have been a close call as to who was more accurate!
  • March Matchness:  We were able to reschedule our monthly practice match to Sunday March 10th!   We didn’t realize so many of our HerHandgunners would be bummed that today’s practice was canceled due to the club’s annual “Spring Steel Match”.  Thanks for speaking up!  🙂  See you all next Sunday!

 

Area-2 Recap and December Practice Match – Annie Get Your Shotgun!

USPSA Area-2 Championship Recap:

We hope you’re having a wonderful November!  We  really missed shooting with you this month.  As you already know, our November Practice Match was cancelled due to the USPSA Area-2 Desert Classic match held earlier in November.   We do have a lot of good news to report from the Match, though.  Here is how our HerHandgun ladies performed – hope I didn’t miss anybody:

  • Sue Little finished 8th in Open Division
  • Trisha Lowry finished 9th in Open Division
  • Cindy Catizone finished 11th in Open Division
  • Gale Aschenbach finished 14th in Open Division
  • Jaci Janes finished 2nd in the Single Stack Division
  • Kippi Leatham won the women’s Area-2 Single Stack Division Championship
  • Cindy Redies finished 4 in Limited Division
  • Debbie Keehart won the women’s Area-2 Limited Division Championship

BIG congrats to all of the ladies who shot the match.  Next year, maybe we’ll see more of you participating at the largest USPSA Area Match in the country!

 

December Practice Match – Annie get your Shotgun:

With the busy holidays impending, we wanted to remind you well in advance of our December practice match.  It will be held Sunday, December 2nd from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Please arrive by 1:45 at the latest to sign up and gear up!

This month, Deb would like to include one stage that uses a shotgun and a pistol.  She will supply her shotgun, but if you have your own, please feel free to bring it [unloaded of course] and your own ammo.  Birdshot only – no slugs.

If you would like to help with the cost of shotgun ammo, please pick up a box of 8 shot 12 gauge shotgun shells or bring a couple of extra dollars.  Deb would certainly appreciate it!

We won’t shoot a lot of shotgun in the stage, but Deb wants to introduce something fun and different!  If you’re a little [shot]gun-shy, we won’t force you to shoot, but we’re thinking you’ll really like it if you give it a try!  🙂

Hope to see you the first Sunday of December!  You will need 100 rounds of pistol ammo to get through the courses.  Remember – you must have prior approval to join us if you haven’t shot with us before.  $10 for Rio members, $15 for guests.  What better way to relieve a little Holiday stress …

Tuesday Night Steel Class!

“Ting, ting, clang” is the sound of instant reward!

Shooting steel targets can be very gratifying and FUN if you know how to shoot them!  Our range, Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club (RSSC) holds an exciting and addicting steel match every Tuesday night.  This match is perfect for the beginning and intermediate shooter! If you think you’re ready to shoot this event and want to take away some of the first-time match jitters, Kip & Deb are offering a Tuesday Night Steel (TNS) preparation class!

CLASS DATES:

  • 2-Day Class – October 27 & 28, 2010
  • TNS Match – November 2, 2010

CLASS FEE AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of HerHandgun Basic Firearms 101 Class or equivalent – This class is not for women who have never shot
  • 9mm or larger caliber gun
  • sturdy belt
  • 2-4 magazines & mag pouches
  • hip holster that covers the trigger/trigger guard
  • Eye & ear protection

Note:  If you don’t have all of the equipment, HerHandgun may have belts, mag pouches & holsters available for loan.

  • 600 rounds of ammunition (200 rounds each night)
  • Class fee = $100.00 – request an application via e-mail for registration
  • Tuesday Night Match fee = $10 for MEMBERS of RSSC or $12 for GUESTS – to be paid at time of match.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Tuesday October 26th:
Students are required to attend the SAFETY meeting at the range starting at 6pm. You must attend the meeting before you are allowed to shoot the match. You may go to the safety meeting any Tuesday prior to this date, if desired.

Wednesday October 27th:
Students meet at the range in Practical Pistol Bay 2 at 5pm for:

  • Gear set up
  • Basic shooting skills review
  • TNS rules and procedures
  • Different start positions with hands and gun
  • Moving from one shooting area to another
  • Reloading
  • Target acquisition
  • Trusting your sight picture
  • Using props and dealing with them as obstacles
  • Strong hand/weak hand shooting

Thursday October 28th:

Students meet at the range in PP Bay 2 at 5:30 pm.

  • We will shoot courses of fire similar to those at TNS, incorporating the basic skills you learned the night before
  • We will shoot with the regularly scheduled HH Practice Match attendees, which will simulate a match environment
  • We will learn how to load & unload under the supervision of a Range Officer
  • We will learn how to score stage runs and operate “The Board”
  • We will have fun and become more familiar with our firearms & basic match operations!

Tuesday November 2nd:

Everyone will meet at the range and we will shoot the match together!!!  We should try to meet by 5:00 p.m., but may be able to accommodate a later schedule for those that cannot get off work.

Okay – It’s official. I’m very forgetful. I made this video after our 2009 Area-2 match in November and forgot to post it. Better late than never …

It was a great match, BTW. If you’re looking for a challenging and fun match to shoot, this one’s among the best!

Congrats again to all of our Arizona Area-2 Champions, Eva Micklethwaite, Debbie Keehart & Kippi Leatham!
